Cocke County is nestled in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains approximately an hour from Ashville, NC and Knoxville, TN.  Thankfully, Cocke County is one of Tennessee's best kept secrets. A diamond in the rough, Cocke County is home to some of the finest people you'll find in the south. It is her people that make her so special.

The county was named after Sen. William Cocke and is one of 95 counties in the state of Tennessee. The current population as of 2004 is approximately 35,000.

Cocke County has four (4) major communities - Newport, Cosby, Del Rio, and Parrottsville and is peppered with quaint smaller communities in between. Cocke County is one of the few places left where you can raise a family in an atmosphere ripe with old-fashioned traditions and values. If there is a buckle in the Bible-Belt, Cocke County may just be it. You can find a church for just about every denomination in this wonderful country town and the people welcome newcomers with open hearts and open arms.

As with most places in our nation these days, business in the Cocke county area is facing many challenges. With Wal-Mart being the center of retail, there are few options when it comes to shopping but the Cocke County Economic Development Council has made great strides over the past several years and our community is enjoying the arrival of several new businesses like Lowe's Home and Garden Center, a new Dollar Tree store and some smaller retailers and restaurants. As economic conditions improve nationally, we expect to see more economic growth in our area. Until then, we strongly encourage our residents to support the local businesses they can when possible.

The message to anyone considering Cocke County as a new home is to some here with an open mind and don't try to change it, let it change you! If you're relocating from a  big city, expect a little bit of culture shock as it takes time to get used to the laid back way of life we live here in the country. We like it that way, and if you considering a move to these parts, you must want to slow down a notch or two or you wouldn't be considering it, but know what you're getting yourself into before you make the move.
